Virtually anyone can do yoga, including those who start out with little strength, energy or flexibility and those who are ill or injured. I say this not as a lifelong yoga teacher or someone who can readily bend his body into the shape of a square knot - I am not, not by a long shot. I am a physician, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine, who came to yoga in middle age and found it - and continues to find it - incredibly challenging. But in this challenge, I have seen steady growth in what I can do and how good I feel. My body has changed in ways I would not have believed possible, as has my mental state. The more I put into my yoga practice, the greater the rewards have become.

February 8, 2012: CBC's Terry O'Reilly spoke with William J. Broad, a senior science writer for the New York Times.

Question: "Are you alone in your viewpoint (regarding risks) ?"

Answer: "The book goes into much greater detail on the reformers in the yoga community; especially the Iyengar people. They are extremely well trained. They understand the potential for injury. They work hard at trying to eliminate it. They'll use all kinds of props. They'll use blocks. They'll use blankets. They have you go into these positions slowly. They get it. The big, big surprise to me after the article came out was the number of reformers out there. There are groups of yogis out there who today are working hard to try to produce a better yoga.
